Card Grading Costs in 2026 Complete Fee Breakdown by Company

The grading fee is just the beginning. Here's what card grading actually costs when you add up every expense.

🔄
Last Updated: February 12, 2026 Reflects PSA's Feb 10, 2026 price increase and CGC's Jan 6, 2026 price increase. All prices verified against official company websites.

When collectors ask "how much does card grading cost?" they usually mean the grading fee. But the grading fee is only 60–75% of the total expense. Shipping, supplies, insurance, and return shipping add $7–15 per card on top of the base fee.

As Public.com's grading guide details, grading costs vary significantly based on the service tier, declared value, and whether you want add-ons like sub-grades. Understanding the full cost structure is essential for calculating your grading ROI.

PSA Pricing Tiers

⚠️ Price Increase (Feb 10, 2026): PSA raised prices by $5/card across Value Bulk, Value, Value Plus, Value Max, and Regular tiers. Turnaround times also increased by 5 days for Value Plus, Value Max, and Regular. Express and above are unchanged. TCG Bulk has been eliminated and consolidated into Value Bulk.

PSA's pricing is tiered by turnaround time and max insured value. Higher-value cards require more expensive service tiers. PSA Collectors Club membership ($99–$249/year) is required for the Value Bulk tier.

BGS Pricing Tiers

Beckett Grading Services (BGS) is known for its detailed sub-grade system (Centering, Corners, Edges, Surface) and the coveted Black Label Pristine 10. BGS now includes sub-grades with all service levels—no separate upcharge. Note: BGS has significantly simplified its tier structure, currently offering Base and Express as the primary service levels.

Service Tier Price/Card Sub-Grades Est. Turnaround Notes
Base $19 Included 75+ business days $3 upcharge for any 10s with subgrades
Standard $30 Included 45 business days
Express $80 Included 15 business days No max value
Priority $150 Included 5 business days No max value

Additional fees: Autograph grading +$5/card. Oversized cards +$10/card. Return shipping +$10 for orders under 5 cards. Cards valued over $500 subject to additional shipping/handling. Insurance available at $1.50 per $100 of coverage.

BGS vs PSA: The Value Play

At $19/card for Base service, BGS is now significantly cheaper than PSA's cheapest tier ($24.99 Value Bulk). The tradeoff is a longer turnaround (75+ vs 95 days) and lower resale premiums on most cards. However, for modern Chrome cards where Black Labels command massive premiums, BGS can offer better ROI than PSA.

SGC Pricing Tiers

SGC offers the most straightforward pricing among the major grading companies, with competitive rates and consistently the fastest turnaround times in the industry. No membership required for any tier. SGC uses volume-based pricing for their Standard tier—the more cards you submit, the lower the per-card cost.

Service Tier Price/Card Est. Turnaround Notes
Standard (20+ cards) $18 ~6 weeks Best bulk rate
Standard (10–19 cards) $19 ~6 weeks
Standard (1–9 cards) $20 ~6 weeks
Express $60 5–10 business days Fastest option

Extras: No upcharges on cards from 2001 to present. Free autograph grades on all cards that grade a 10 autograph. Insurance available at $1.50 per $100 of coverage.

SGC: Best Value in 2026

With PSA's latest price increase pushing Value Bulk to $24.99 and Value to $32.99, SGC's $18–20/card Standard tier is now 25–40% cheaper than PSA's cheapest options—with significantly faster turnaround times (~6 weeks vs 75–95 days). For cards where the PSA label premium doesn't justify the cost difference, SGC is the clear budget winner.

Hidden Costs Most Collectors Forget

Outbound Shipping ($2–5/card)

USPS Priority Mail with insurance. Cost per card decreases with larger submissions. A 10-card submission in a flat rate box costs ~$2.50/card. A single card costs $8–10 to ship safely.

Return Shipping ($2–4/card)

Grading companies charge for return shipping, typically $8–12 per order (not per card). For small submissions, this adds significant per-card cost.

Supplies ($0.50–1/card)

Penny sleeves (~$0.02), Card Savers (~$0.30–0.50), cardboard, bubble wrap, box, tape. Small per-card cost but adds up on bulk submissions.

Insurance ($1–5/card)

Shipping insurance for high-value submissions. USPS Priority includes $50 free. Additional insurance costs ~$2.50 per $100 of declared value.

Opportunity Cost (Variable)

Your capital is locked for 30–120+ days. In a volatile market, card values can drop significantly during the grading window. This is the most overlooked cost. See our ROI guide for how to factor this in.

Total Cost Comparison (All-In)

Here's what grading actually costs per card when you include all expenses, based on a typical 10-card budget submission at each company's cheapest tier:

Cost Component PSA (Value Bulk) BGS (Base) SGC (Standard 20+) CGC (Bulk)
Grading Fee $24.99 $19.00 $18.00 $15.00
Outbound Shipping $2.50 $2.50 $2.50 $2.50
Return Shipping $2.00 $2.00 $2.00 $2.00
Supplies $0.75 $0.75 $0.75 $0.75
Insurance $1.00 $1.00 $1.50 $1.00
Total Per Card (All-In) ~$31.24 ~$25.25 ~$24.75 ~$21.25

Based on a 20-card bulk submission with standard insurance. PSA Value Bulk requires Collectors Club membership ($99–$249/year, not included above). Single-card submissions cost $5–8 more per card due to higher per-card shipping costs.

All-In Cost Per Card (Cheapest Tier, 20-Card Submission)

PSA (Value Bulk) ~$31.24
BGS (Base) ~$25.25
SGC (Standard) ~$24.75
CGC (Bulk) ~$21.25 ← cheapest

7 Ways to Reduce Grading Costs

1. Submit in Bulk

Shipping costs are amortized across more cards. A 20-card submission costs roughly the same to ship as a 5-card submission, cutting per-card shipping cost by 75%.

2. Use Group Submissions / Middlemen

Middleman services aggregate cards from multiple collectors into large bulk submissions, often qualifying for volume discounts. Per-card fees can be $3–5 lower than individual submissions.

3. Choose the Right Service Tier

Don't pay for Express when Economy will do. If you can wait 60+ days, the savings are substantial. Only use faster tiers for time-sensitive cards (trending players, upcoming releases).

4. Pre-Grade Ruthlessly

Every card that comes back as a PSA 8 or lower is wasted money. Use our pre-grading checklist to eliminate marginal cards before submission. The best way to save on grading is to not grade cards that won't benefit from it.

5. Buy Supplies in Bulk

Card Savers, penny sleeves, and shipping supplies are significantly cheaper when purchased in bulk. A 200-pack of Card Savers costs ~$0.25/each vs. $0.50+ individually.

6. Consider SGC, BGS, or CGC for Budget Submissions

CGC Bulk at $15/card is the cheapest option available. SGC at $18/card and BGS Base at $19/card are both significantly cheaper than PSA's $24.99 Value Bulk. For cards where the PSA label premium doesn't significantly affect resale value, the savings add up fast.

7. Watch for Promotions

Grading companies occasionally offer promotional pricing, especially during card shows and events. PSA has offered reduced rates at the National Sports Collectors Convention. Follow companies on social media for announcements.

Understanding Declared Value

Declared value is the estimated market value of your card that you report on the submission form. It serves two purposes: (1) it determines which service tier you must use (PSA requires higher tiers for higher values), and (2) it sets the insurance coverage for the card while in the grading company's possession.

Important: Don't Under-Declare

Some collectors under-declare card values to qualify for cheaper service tiers. This is risky: if the card is lost or damaged while at the grading company, your insurance claim is limited to the declared value. A $2,000 card declared at $499 to qualify for PSA Economy is only insured for $499. Additionally, grading companies may reject submissions with obviously under-declared values.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the cheapest way to get a card graded?

CGC Bulk at $15/card is currently the cheapest grading fee available, followed by SGC Standard at $18–20/card and BGS Base at $19/card. Submitted as part of a 20+ card bulk submission, total all-in cost is approximately $21–25/card. For PSA specifically, Value Bulk at $24.99/card (requires Collectors Club membership) brings the all-in total to ~$31/card.

Do grading costs ever go down?

Historically, grading costs have trended upward as demand has increased. PSA significantly raised prices during the 2020–2021 boom. Prices have stabilized somewhat since then, but don't expect significant decreases. Competition from SGC and CGC has helped keep economy-tier pricing competitive.

Is there a minimum number of cards for submission?

PSA's Value Bulk tier requires a minimum of 20 cards and Collectors Club membership. All other PSA tiers and other companies (BGS, SGC, CGC) accept single-card submissions, though the per-card shipping cost makes single-card submissions expensive. Most collectors wait until they have at least 10–20 cards to submit.

Can I get a refund if I'm unhappy with the grade?

No. Grading companies do not offer refunds based on the grade received. You're paying for the grading service, not a specific grade. This is why pre-grading is so important—it helps you avoid paying to grade cards that won't benefit from the process.
