How Card Grades Are Calculated

PSA Grading

PSA uses a 1-10 scale without published subgrades. The overall grade is determined by the lowest condition area, though graders have some discretion. PSA 10 (Gem Mint) requires near-perfect condition in all areas.

  • PSA 10: Gem Mint - Virtually perfect
  • PSA 9: Mint - One minor flaw
  • PSA 8: Near Mint-Mint - Minor wear
  • PSA 7: Near Mint - Slight wear

BGS Grading

BGS provides subgrades for Centering, Corners, Edges, and Surface. The overall grade is a weighted average, with corners and edges typically having more impact.

  • BGS 10 Black Label: All four subgrades must be 10
  • BGS 10 Pristine: Average of 10, no subgrade below 9.5
  • BGS 9.5 Gem Mint: High subgrades averaging 9.5+
  • BGS 9 Mint: Solid subgrades averaging 9+

CGC Grading

CGC uses a 1-10 scale similar to PSA. Popular for Pokémon and other TCG cards. They also offer subgrades as an optional service.

SGC Grading

SGC uses a 1-10 scale and is known for expertise in vintage cards. Their grading standards are considered consistent and fair.
