7-Step How-To 8 FAQ Answers All 4 Major Graders Sourced & Cited
Short Answer

Card grading is the professional authentication and condition evaluation of trading cards on a 1–10 scale by companies like PSA, BGS, SGC, and CGC. Cards are examined on four criteria: corners, edges, surface, and centering, then sealed in a tamper-evident plastic slab with a numeric grade label.

In 2026, PSA grading starts at $79.99/card (Value tiers paused). Only 8.88% of submissions earn PSA 10 Gem Mint. AI pre-grading tools like PreGradeCards predict grades with 89% accuracy before you spend money on submission.

What Is Card Grading?

Card grading is the process of having a trading card professionally authenticated and assigned a numeric condition grade by an independent third-party company. The card is examined under magnification, graded on a standardized scale, then sealed ("slabbed") in a tamper-evident plastic holder that permanently displays the grade and a unique certification number.

Graded cards are worth significantly more than ungraded ("raw") cards because the grade provides a verified, objective condition record that eliminates buyer uncertainty. A PSA 10 Gem Mint card typically sells for 3–15x its raw equivalent. Grading also protects cards from handling damage after they leave the slab factory.

The 1–10 Card Grading Scale

Used by PSA, BGS, SGC, and CGC. PSA 10 is called Gem Mint. BGS 10 Pristine and Black Label 10 are slightly stricter.

The 4 Grading Criteria

Every grading company evaluates the same four attributes. PSA combines them into one holistic grade. BGS scores each separately (sub-grades).

🔲 Corners

The most-examined attribute. Each of the 4 corners is checked for sharpness. Wear shows as rounding, fraying, or whitening. A single visibly soft corner typically drops a card from PSA 10 to PSA 8–9.

PSA 10: All 4 perfectly sharp. No whitening visible at any angle.

📏 Edges

All 4 edges are inspected for nicks, dings, chips, or roughness. Edge damage is often caused by poor storage, rubber bands, or card box wear. Even tiny chips are grade-killers.

PSA 10: Smooth and clean on all 4 edges. No chips or roughness.

✨ Surface

The front and back surfaces are examined under raking light for scratches, print lines, wax stains, cloudiness, fingerprints, and holo damage. Surface is the hardest criterion to evaluate at home.

PSA 10: No visible surface flaws under loupe magnification.

📐 Centering

Measured as a ratio of border widths: left:right and top:bottom. PSA 10 requires 55/45 or better on front, 75/25 on back. Off-center cards are immediately obvious and are one of the most common PSA 10 disqualifiers.

PSA 10: 55/45 front, 75/25 back. Measure with a centering tool.

How to Submit a Card for Grading: 7 Steps

Complete step-by-step process from inspection to receiving your slab. Applies to PSA, BGS, SGC, and CGC.

1

Inspect Under Magnification

Use a 10x loupe for corners and edges. Use a 5500K LED lamp held at 45° for surface flaws. Use a centering ruler or calipers for ratios. Take notes on each of the 4 criteria.

2

Self-Grade & Decide

Score corners, edges, surface, centering 1–10 each. Average for an estimated grade. Check PSA 10 probability with PreGradeCards AI (free). Only submit if: card worth $100+ raw, 70%+ PSA 10 chance, and expected premium covers fees 3x.

3

Choose Your Grading Company

PSA for maximum resale. BGS for sub-grades. SGC for vintage or speed. CGC for Pokémon/MTG. In June 2026, PSA Value tiers are paused — cheapest is Regular at $79.99.

4

Create Account & Fill Order Form

Register on the company's website. Fill the online submission form (service tier, declared value, card description). Print the packing slip — this goes inside your package.

5

Pack with the Sandwich Method

Penny sleeve → semi-rigid holder → team bag → bubble wrap on both sides → rigid cardboard → padded box. Never use tape near the card. Double-box for $500+ cards. Include printed packing slip inside.

6

Ship with Insurance

Use USPS Priority Mail, FedEx, or UPS with tracking and signature confirmation. Insure for the full replacement value. PSA recommends registered mail for submissions over $5,000.

7

Track & Receive

Monitor your submission status in your account dashboard. PSA Regular: 65–90 days. BGS Economy: 80–100 days. SGC: 10–20 days. Receive your slab and verify the grade and cert number match your order.

Card Grading Costs & ROI (2026)

At PSA Regular $79.99 + ~$20 shipping + ~$10 insurance = ~$110 total per card. Your PSA 10 must sell for $330+ to break even at a 3x return threshold. For BGS at $20 + $15 shipping = $35 total, your BGS 10 needs to sell for $105+.

Scenario Total Cost PSA 10 Needed Worth It?
Common modern card ($2 raw)~$110$330+No — almost never
Mid-value RC ($50 raw)~$110$330+Maybe — only if high PSA 10 rate
Strong RC ($150 raw, 25% PSA 10)~$110$330+Yes — if PSA 10 worth $500+
Vintage Jordanfighter ($500 raw)~$130$390+Yes — PSA 10 likely $3,000+
Pokémon Shadowless Charizard ($1,200 raw)~$130$390+Yes — PSA 10 worth $15,000+

Frequently Asked Questions

What is card grading?
Card grading is the professional authentication and condition assessment of trading cards by third-party companies like PSA, BGS, SGC, and CGC. Cards are examined on corners, edges, surface, and centering and assigned a numeric grade (1–10). The card is then sealed in a tamper-evident plastic holder ("slab") with the grade printed on the label. Graded cards sell for 3x–15x their raw equivalents.
How much does card grading cost?
PSA grading starts at $79.99/card (Regular, June 2026). BGS starts at $20. SGC starts at $25. CGC starts at $15. Adding shipping (~$20) and insurance (~$10–50) brings total PSA cost to roughly $110–$150 per card. PSA Value tiers under $79.99 are currently paused.
What percentage of cards get PSA 10?
Only 8.88% of all PSA submissions receive a PSA 10 Gem Mint grade. For modern Topps Chrome 2020–2025, PSA 10 rates range from 15–30%. For vintage pre-1980 cards, PSA 10 rates are typically under 1%.
PSA vs BGS: which is better?
PSA commands 10–30% higher resale premiums. BGS is 50–70% cheaper ($20 vs $79.99) and offers sub-grades. Use PSA for maximum resale value. Use BGS for mid-value modern cards where sub-grades provide useful data. In June 2026, with PSA Value paused, BGS is the best value option for cards worth $100–$300.
How long does grading take?
PSA Regular: 65–90 days. BGS Economy: 80–100 days. SGC Standard: 10–20 days. CGC Bulk: ~120 days. TAG Priority (only open tier): 5–7 days. SGC is the fastest major grader available in June 2026.
What is AI card grading?
AI card grading uses computer vision and machine learning to analyze card scan images and predict PSA/BGS grades. Tools like PreGradeCards achieve 89% accuracy vs PSA grades. AI grading is used for pre-screening before professional submission — it does not replace official PSA/BGS certification, but saves money by filtering cards unlikely to grade well.
When is grading NOT worth it?
Grading loses money when: the raw card is worth under $50; the card has obvious visible flaws; the card is a common base card; the PSA 10 premium is minimal (thin market); or your PSA 10 probability is under 30%. Running the numbers: at $110 total cost, your PSA 10 must sell for $330+ to achieve a 3x return.
What is a PSA pop report?
A PSA population report (pop report) shows how many copies of a specific card have received each grade. Low PSA 10 populations (under 50) indicate genuine scarcity and support premium prices. High populations (500+) suppress values. Pop reports are essential data for investment decisions. Access them free at PSA.com or via PreGradeCards' Census Aggregator.
