Vintage grading is fundamentally different from Modern grading. With Modern, we look for perfection. With Vintage, we look for preservation.
The Big 3 Vintage Killers
On a modern card, a scratch is bad. On a vintage card, these 3 things are catastrophic:
1. Paper Loss
What: When a piece of the card stock is ripped off (usually from tape or being stuck to another card).
Grade Impact: Instant PSA 1 or 1.5. It is considered "Damage," not wear.
2. Creases
What: A bend in the card that breaks the paper fibers.
Grade Impact: Instant PSA 4 max. Even a microscopic crease kills the eye appeal.
3. Staining
What: Wax stains (from the wrapper) or gum stains.
Grade Impact: PSA is surprisingly lenient on REVERSE wax stains. You can still get a PSA 8 or 9 with a waxed back (labeled "ST" or "OF" sometimes, but often just a lower grade).
Gum Stains: Much worse. Usually drops it to a 3-5.
Adjusted Corner Standards
You do not need razor sharp corners for a high grade vintage card.
- PSA 8 (NM-MT): Can have slight fraying visible under magnification.
- PSA 5 (EX): Can have visible wear and slight rounding, but no creases.
- PSA 1 (POOR): Rounded like a playing card.
O-Pee-Chee & Rough Cuts
If you are grading 1980s O-Pee-Chee (Gretzky era), do not fear the rough cut. That jagged "wire cut" edge is factory standard. PSA does not punish it if the corners are sharp. In fact, many collectors prefer it as a sign of authenticity.
