What Is Card Grading? Authentication, Protection, & Profit

It is the difference between a $50 card and a $5,000 asset. Here is how the grading process actually works.

In the modern hobby, "raw" cards (cards not in a holder) are viewed with suspicion. "Is it trimmed? Is it a reprint? Is that corner soft?" Third-party grading answers these questions definitively. By encapsulating a card in a sonic-welded, tamper-proof plastic slab, you are freezing its condition in time.

1. The Three Pillars of Grading

Why pay $20, $50, or $100 to encase a piece of cardboard? It comes down to three P's:

1. Proof (Authentication)

The first job of a grader is confirming the card is real. In an era of high-quality counterfeits, a PSA or SGC authentication is the "certificate of title" for your asset.

2. Protection (Preservation)

A graded slab is UV-resistant, shock-resistant, and waterproof. It turns a fragile piece of paper into a durable brick that can be handled safely.

3. Profit (Valuation)

This is why we do it. A raw Michael Jordan rookie might sell for $2,000. A PSA 10 Gem Mint copy sells for $200,000+. The grade acts as a "value multiplier."

2. The Grading Scale (1-10)

Every company uses a variation of the standard 10-point scale. Here is what the numbers actually mean:

10 Gem Mint - Virtually perfect. 50/50 to 60/40 centering. Sharp corners. Zero surface flaws.
9 Mint - Look perfect to the naked eye. Flaws usually visible only under magnification (tiny print spot, slightly off-center).
8 Near Mint-Mint - High end. A distinct flaw exists: a white corner tip, or noticeable off-centering (70/30).
1-7 Mid-Grade to Poor - Visible wear. Creases (automatic PSA 5 or lower), rounded corners, staining.

3. Who Are The "Big Four"?

You can't just use any grading company. The market only respects a few names:

PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator)

The King. Highest resale value. Essential for modern and vintage investment pieces.

SGC (Sportscard Guaranty)

The "Tuxedo" slab. Fastest turnaround. Dominant in vintage (pre-1980).

CGC (Certified Guaranty)

The TCG Leader. Best for Pokémon/Magic due to crystal clear slabs and sub-grades.

BGS (Beckett)

The old guard. Famous for the "Black Label" 10. Struggling lately but still respected for thick cards.

Should You Grade?

Not every card should be graded. If the grading fee ($25) + shipping ($20) is higher than the value of the card in a PSA 9 slab, do not submit it. Use our calculator to check the math first.
