The biggest mistake is over-cleaning. If your card has a print defect, trying to "buff it out" with a cloth can turn a PSA 10 into a PSA 6. Only clean cards with visible dust or removable residue.
Advanced Light Raking
The single most important tool is your desk lamp. Turn off all overhead lights. Angle the card so the light "skims" the surface. This reveals hidden indentations that are invisible under standard light.
