How to Read Any Card
The complete guide to decoding trading cards and sports cards — set codes, rarity marks, editions, parallels, serials, and printing errors. This is the same knowledge our AI identification uses, now written out for collectors.

Pokémon
Set symbol · rarity mark · edition- Pre-2003 sets use an expansion symbol — bottom-right of Pokémon cards, bottom-LEFT on Trainer and Energy cards. Since Scarlet & Violet, sets print a 3-letter code (PAR, OBF, TEF…) plus a language marker (EN).
- Rarity is the mark in the bottom corner: circle = Common, diamond = Uncommon, star = Rare (2 stars = double rare, 3 = hyper rare), 4-diamond from Diamond & Pearl on.
- A collector number above the set total (e.g. 188/132) means a Secret / Illustration / Full-Art rare.
- "Edition 1" circular stamp lower-left = 1st Edition. In Base Set: 1st Ed has a thin HP font and no art-border drop shadow; Shadowless has no stamp but no shadow; Unlimited has the shadow.
- Finishes: reverse holo, cosmos/cracked-ice holo patterns, e-reader dots. Name a holo pattern only when you can see it.
Yu-Gi-Oh!
Card number · edition text · foil rarity- Card number under the art, right side, format
AAAA-RR###(e.g.LOB-EN005): set abbreviation, region letters (EN/DE/FR…), number in set. Series 2 = 2-char codes, Series 3 = 3-char, Series 5+ = 4-char. Earliest NALOB-001prints have no region letters. - "1st Edition" under the art (pre-2014) or on the bottom edge (2014+); "Limited Edition" on many promos; blank = Unlimited.
- Rarity is read from the foil, not a symbol: plain = Common, silver name = Rare, holofoil art = Super Rare, gold name + holofoil = Ultra Rare, rainbow name + patterned foil = Secret Rare (plus Ultimate, Starlight, Quarter Century).
Magic: The Gathering
Expansion symbol · set code · foil- The expansion symbol sits right of the type line; its color = rarity: black/white = Common, silver = Uncommon, gold = Rare, red-orange = Mythic (Shards of Alara+), purple = Time Spiral timeshifted. Pre-Exodus symbols were all black.
- Set code on the bottom-left info line (e.g.
LTR). Core sets before Sixth Edition have no expansion symbol at all. - Foil vs non-foil; serialized collector-booster cards (2022+) and Secret Lair promos are separate printings — don't guess a set for them.
One Piece (Bandai)
Rarity letters · ★ parallels · back color- Rarity letters print bottom-right beside the set code (
SEC OP01-120): C, UC, R, L (Leader), SR, SP, SEC, TR. Set codes: OP01+, ST01+ (starters), EB (extras). - A ★ above the code = alternate art / parallel / "manga rare" variant — same collector number as the base card.
- Back color: blue = standard, red = Leader, white = DON!!. Silver border = SR, gold border = SEC, textured foil = SEC/alt art.
Disney Lorcana
Set number · rarity shape · foil- Bottom-left: artist, number N/204, language (EN), and a set number 1–7 (1 = The First Chapter … 7). Promo numbers include P.
- Bottom-center rarity symbol: grey circle = Common, open book = Uncommon, bronze triangle = Rare, silver diamond = Super Rare, gold pentagon = Legendary, rainbow hexagon = Enchanted.
- Enchanted cards are alternate art with ink-wash foiling and a number above the set total.
Flesh & Blood

Union Arena
Full code · star printings- Full code reads set/series-card, e.g.
UE01BT/BLK-1-001. Rarities: C, UC, R, SR, AP, UR, SP. A star after the rarity = a separate printing with its own price.
Sports Cards (all sports)
Parallel · serial · rookie · autograph- Identification order: year (front design + back copyright) → manufacturer → product → player → number → parallel/insert/serial/auto/relic → rookie/1st-Bowman markers.
- Same player + same photo with a different border color, foil, or serial is a different card. Parallel names are product-specific — "gold" in Prizm is not "gold" in Topps Chrome.
- Serial numbers (xx/99, 1/1) are often stamped only on the card BACK. SP/SSP = unnumbered short prints.
- Rookie markers: RC logo, "1st Bowman". Autographs: on-card (ink on the card), sticker (signed sticker applied), or facsimile (printed — identical on every copy; not an autograph).
- Chrome families (Topps Chrome, Bowman Chrome, Prizm, Optic, Select, Mosaic, Finest) ship colored/patterned parallels — inspect foil color and texture, not just layout.
Manufacturing errors
errors ≠ damagePrinting errors are factory defects, not handling damage — a miscut, crimp, or print line is a property of the sheet, not the owner. Graders treat them separately, and some error collectors pay premiums for them.
Cut shifted — extra border, possibly part of another card. Minor vs major by how many other cards show.
Wavy crimped edge from pack sealing (partial, full, or crimp-and-cut).
Image printed twice, slightly offset.
Holofoil on the back instead of the front (sheet inverted).
Foil stamp upside down or misplaced.
Registration shift — colors/layers out of alignment.
Card missing its holofoil layer.
Small circular spot where ink failed to adhere.
Perfectly straight hairline from the printing rollers.
Straight line in the printed image, common on foil/chrome cards.
From identification to grading
- Identify the exact card before judging condition — a gold parallel and its base card grade the same but price very differently.
- Centering: PSA 10 needs ~55/45 front, 75/25 back, measured from the worst point including tilt.
- Distinguish print defects from damage by how the mark reacts to light: a line that changes the printed image is a print line; a groove that changes reflection is a scratch or dent.
- Manufacturing errors (miscut, crimp, foil-back) are labeled, not penalized as damage — report them in special features when submitting.
