The Short Answer

  • Inspect under 10x magnification — Flaws invisible to the naked eye determine PSA grades. Use a jeweler's loupe or phone macro lens.
  • Never use chemicals or water — PSA can detect residue. Use only a clean microfiber cloth for dust.
  • Document with photos — Before-and-after photos protect you if cards are damaged in transit or grading.
  • Pre-screen with AI — Submit only cards with 70%+ PSA 10 probability. Cards predicted PSA 8 or lower typically lose money.
  • Use new penny sleeves — Old sleeves transfer dust and oils to card surfaces. Replace before shipping.

How Do You Prepare Cards for Grading?

7 Steps to Maximum Grades
Inspect → Clean → Center → Document → AI Screen → Sleeve → Submit
Preparation can improve grades by 0.5-1 points — worth $50-500+ per card

Proper preparation before submitting to PSA, BGS, or SGC can mean the difference between a PSA 8 and a PSA 9 — a gap worth hundreds or thousands of dollars on valuable cards. This 7-step process is used by professional submitters and card dealers to maximize grades and protect their investment.

Step 1: Magnified Inspection (The Most Important Step)

PSA graders examine cards under magnification. You should too. Flaws invisible to the naked eye are often the difference between grades.

Required Tools

Tool Cost Best For
Jeweler's Loupe (10x) $8-15 Corner wear, surface scratches, print defects
Phone Macro Lens $15-30 Documentation photos, edge inspection
LED Desk Lamp $20-40 Even lighting eliminates shadows hiding flaws
Centering Tool $5-10 Precise border measurement
UV Light (365nm) $10-20 Detecting alterations, fluorescence checks

What to Look For Under Magnification

  • Corners: Look for whitening, fuzzing, or rounding. Even slight corner wear drops a card from PSA 10 to 9.
  • Edges: Check for chipping (especially on chrome cards), rough cuts, and edge whitening. Run your finger along the edge — any roughness indicates wear.
  • Surface: Look for scratches, print lines, dimples, and clouding. Tilt the card under light at multiple angles — surface flaws are angle-dependent.
  • Centering: Use a ruler or centering tool to measure border ratios. PSA requires 60/40 or better for PSA 10. See our centering guide for details.
  • Print defects: Factory errors like print dots, roller marks, or ink spots cannot be cleaned — they are permanent grade deductions.

Grade Killer Checklist

Flaw Max Grade Can It Be Fixed?
Soft corner (whitening) PSA 8-9 No — permanent damage
Surface scratch PSA 7-9 No — do NOT attempt to polish
Edge chipping PSA 7-8 No — permanent
Dust on surface PSA 10 (if cleanable) Yes — microfiber cloth only
Fingerprints PSA 9-10 (if cleanable) Yes — microfiber cloth only
Off-center (70/30) PSA 8 No — factory defect
Print line PSA 8-9 No — factory defect

Step 2: Safe Cleaning Methods

Cleaning cards before submission is controversial — done wrong, it damages cards permanently. Done right, it removes only surface debris and can improve grades by 0.5-1 points.

What You CAN Do (Safe)

  • Microfiber cloth — Gently wipe surface to remove dust and fingerprints. Use a fresh, clean cloth.
  • Compressed air — Blow away loose dust particles. Hold can 6+ inches from card.
  • Lint roller (lightly) — Remove hair and lint from card surface. Do not press hard.

What You MUST NOT Do (Dangerous)

  • Water or moisture — PSA detects water damage under UV light. Can cause warping.
  • Chemicals (Windex, alcohol, etc.) — Residue is visible under magnification and UV light. Can dissolve card finish.
  • Erasers — Micro-abrasion damages card surface permanently.
  • Tape or adhesives — Residue is impossible to remove completely.
  • Card polishing/conditioning — PSA considers this altering. Card will be rejected or given "Altered" designation.

The PSA Safe Cleaning Protocol

  1. Wash hands thoroughly (no lotion after)
  2. Work on a clean, soft surface (microfiber mat)
  3. Remove card from current holder
  4. Hold card by edges only — never touch surface
  5. Gently blow off loose dust with compressed air
  6. Lightly wipe surface with clean microfiber cloth (one direction, minimal pressure)
  7. Inspect under 10x magnification to confirm no streaks
  8. Place in fresh penny sleeve immediately

Important: If a card has visible surface damage (scratches, scuffs), do not attempt to fix it. Any cleaning beyond dust removal risks "Altered" designation, which destroys a card's value. Learn about altered card detection to understand what PSA looks for.

Step 3: Measure Centering Precisely

Centering is one of PSA's "Four Pillars" and accounts for roughly 25% of the grade. A card with perfect corners and surface but 70/30 centering maxes out at PSA 8.

PSA Centering Standards

PSA Grade Centering Requirement Visual
Gem Mint 10 60/40 or better Borders appear nearly equal, slight tolerance
Mint 9 65/35 or better Minor centering shift visible
NM-MT 8 70/30 or better Noticeable but not extreme off-center
NM 7 75/25 or better Clearly off-center but not drastic

How to Measure Centering

  1. Measure left border in millimeters (use calipers or ruler)
  2. Measure right border in millimeters
  3. Calculate ratio: Smaller border ÷ Larger border = centering ratio
  4. Example: Left = 3mm, Right = 2mm → 2÷3 = 0.67 (67/33 — passes for PSA 9)

Pro Tip: Front and back centering are judged separately. A card with perfect front centering but poor back centering can still achieve PSA 9 (front is weighted more heavily). Read our complete centering guide for the full breakdown.

Step 4: Document Everything

Before shipping cards for grading, create a complete photographic record. This protects you in three ways:

  1. Damage in transit — Photos prove card condition before shipping
  2. Grading disputes — If PSA assigns an unexpectedly low grade, photos support a review request
  3. Insurance claims — Photos document declared value and condition for lost package claims

Required Photos Per Card

Photo Type Purpose Settings
Front full Overall condition, centering Even lighting, no glare, centered
Back full Back centering, surface Same as front
Corner close-ups (4) Document corner condition Macro mode, angled lighting
Edge close-ups (2) Document edge wear/chipping Macro mode, side lighting
Surface detail Show scratches, print defects Macro, multiple angles

Storage: Save photos in a dedicated folder named after the submission date. Include card name and estimated grade in filenames (e.g., "2026-06-14_Jordan-1986-Fleer_est-PSA9"). Upload to cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox) as backup.

Step 5: AI Pre-Screening (The Money-Saver)

The most important preparation step is determining whether a card is worth submitting at all. At $79.99+ per card, submitting cards that earn PSA 7 or 8 is a losing proposition for most cards.

The AI Pre-Screening Process

  1. Scan card with PreGradeCards AI — Takes 30 seconds per card
  2. Review predicted grade — AI estimates PSA grade with 89% accuracy
  3. Check confidence score — Scores above 85% indicate high prediction confidence
  4. Compare to break-even — Use our ROI calculator to determine if the predicted grade justifies the fee

Submit Rule of Thumb

Submit when ALL are true:

• AI predicts PSA 9 or 10 (not 8 or lower)
• Card value at predicted grade exceeds $200
• Confidence score is 80% or higher
• No visible grade killers under magnification (scratches, soft corners, heavy edge wear)

Do NOT submit when:
• AI predicts PSA 7 or lower
• Card value at PSA 9 is under $100
• Visible surface damage cannot be cleaned
• Centering exceeds 70/30 ratio

Example Savings: A collector with 50 cards uses AI pre-screening and discovers 22 cards are predicted PSA 8 or lower. At $79.99 each, submitting those 22 cards would cost $1,760 with minimal return. AI screening saves $1,760 in wasted submission fees. Try our free AI pre-grading tool.

Step 6: Fresh Sleeves & Holders

Never ship cards in old or dusty sleeves. Penny sleeves cost $0.01 each — there is no excuse for reusing dirty ones.

Sleeve Requirements

  • Penny sleeves — Polypropylene (not PVC), acid-free, crystal clear
  • Size — Standard (for regular cards) or thick (for jersey/relic cards)
  • Condition — Brand new, no dust, no fingerprints
  • Application — Slide card in with opening at bottom

Holder Selection by Grader

Grader Required Holder Notes
PSA Card Saver I Semi-rigid only — no top loaders
BGS Card Saver I (preferred) or top loader Top loaders accepted but not preferred
SGC Card Saver I or team bag Flexible on holders
CGC Card Saver I Requires semi-rigid holders

Where to Buy: BCW Supplies and Ultra Pro sell Card Saver I holders in bulk (200-packs for ~$40). Buying in bulk saves 40% over individual purchases.

Step 7: Final Submission Checklist

Before sealing your package, run through this checklist:

Pre-Submission Checklist

  • ☐ All cards inspected under 10x magnification
  • ☐ Surface dust/fingerprints removed with microfiber cloth
  • ☐ Centering measured and documented
  • ☐ Photos taken (front, back, corners, edges, surface)
  • ☐ AI pre-screening completed — only PSA 9+ candidates submitted
  • ☐ Fresh penny sleeves applied to all cards
  • ☐ Cards in correct holders (Card Saver I for PSA)
  • ☐ Invoice printed (one copy inside package, one outside)
  • ☐ PSA account has valid payment method on file
  • ☐ Declared values accurate and match insurance
  • ☐ Shipping insurance purchased ($1 per $100 value)
  • ☐ Tracking number saved and noted in spreadsheet

The 48-Hour Rule

Wait 48 hours after cleaning before shipping. This allows any micro-moisture from handling to evaporate and gives you time to re-inspect cards with fresh eyes. Many collectors spot missed flaws after stepping away for a day.

Bottom Line: Thorough preparation takes 10-15 minutes per card but can improve grades by 0.5-1 points. On a $200 card, that difference is $50-150 in value — a massive return on time invested.
