Between 1986 and 1994, sports card companies ran printing presses 24/7. This created the "Junk Wax" era. Most of these cards are worthless kindling. However, a select few—when graded PSA 10—are worth more than a luxury car.
The Top 10 Titans (Visual Guide)
Derek Jeter (Foil Rookie)
The foil surface on this card is so sensitive that breathing on it scratches it. 99.9% of these came out of the pack as a PSA 7 or 8. A true 10 is the ultimate modern grail.
$200,000+ PSA 10 Pop: 21
Frank Thomas (NNOF)
A printing error where the black ink failed on his nameplate. Extremely rare and iconic. Most copies were thrown away as "defects" in 1990.
$170,000+ PSA 10 Pop: < 5
Michael Jordan (Rookie)
The most recognizable basketball card in history. The red and blue borders chip instantly. Even though 300+ exist, demand is infinite.
$160,000+ PSA 10 Pop: 322
Jerry Rice (Rookie)
The green borders on 1986 Topps football are notoriously fragile. Rice is the GOAT WR, and this card is his only true rookie.
$65,000+ PSA 10 Pop: ~60
Chipper Jones (Rookie)
Sent to troops in the Gulf War. Most were destroyed in combat zones. The gold foil stamp makes it unique compared to the worthless base version.
$21,000+ PSA 10 Pop: 32
Michael Jordan (Refractor)
The birth of the "Refractor" technology. This card launched the modern era of parallel chasing.
$20,000+ PSA 10 Pop: 41
Mariano Rivera (Rookie)
The Sandman in "plain clothes". High gloss surface and white borders make tens possible, but centering is often 70/30.
$8,000+ PSA 10 Pop: Low
Michael Jordan (Sticker)
It's a sticker. Kids peeled them. Finding one unpeeled and perfectly centered is harder than the base card.
$6,500+ PSA 10 Pop: Very Low
Ken Griffey Jr. (Star Rookie)
The "Face" of the hobby. Overproduced? Yes. Iconic? Yes. A PSA 10 is liquid gold.
$2,000+ PSA 10 Pop: 4,000+
Barry Sanders (Rookie)
Green borders again. Score card stock was cheap and prone to "spidering" at the corners.
$1,300+ PSA 10 Pop: ~2,000The Next 40 (Ranked List)
