The Junk Wax Top 50:
Gold in the Garbage

They printed 5 million copies of everything. But they printed them poorly. Finding a "Gem Mint" copy of these cards is statistically harder than winning the lottery.

Junk Wax Era Holy Grails PSA 10

Between 1986 and 1994, sports card companies ran printing presses 24/7. This created the "Junk Wax" era. Most of these cards are worthless kindling. However, a select few—when graded PSA 10—are worth more than a luxury car.

1
1993 SP Derek Jeter Foil Rookie
1993 SP #279

Derek Jeter (Foil Rookie)

The foil surface on this card is so sensitive that breathing on it scratches it. 99.9% of these came out of the pack as a PSA 7 or 8. A true 10 is the ultimate modern grail.

1990 Topps Frank Thomas No Name on Front
1990 TOPPS #414 (ERROR)

3
1986 Fleer Michael Jordan Rookie
1986 FLEER #57

4
1986 Topps Jerry Rice Rookie
1986 TOPPS #161

Jerry Rice (Rookie)

The green borders on 1986 Topps football are notoriously fragile. Rice is the GOAT WR, and this card is his only true rookie.

5
1991 Topps Desert Shield Chipper Jones
1991 TOPPS DESERT SHIELD #333

1993 FINEST #1 (REFRACTOR)

1992 BOWMAN #302

$8,000+ PSA 10 Pop: Low
8
1986 Fleer Sticker Jordan
1986 FLEER STICKER #8

Michael Jordan (Sticker)

It's a sticker. Kids peeled them. Finding one unpeeled and perfectly centered is harder than the base card.

$6,500+ PSA 10 Pop: Very Low
9
1989 UD Griffey
1989 UPPER DECK #1

Ken Griffey Jr. (Star Rookie)

The "Face" of the hobby. Overproduced? Yes. Iconic? Yes. A PSA 10 is liquid gold.

$2,000+ PSA 10 Pop: 4,000+
