Investigation Deep-Dive

What Collectors & Dealers Need to Know About the Heist

1. The Outbound Return Vulnerability

These cards were not inbound submissions arriving at PSA — they were outbound returns that had already completed authentication, grading, and encapsulation. That makes this the peak valuation moment in a card's submission life: high grades are locked in, encapsulated, and ready for market delivery.

2. Compensation: FMV vs. Declared MIV

PSA reimburses victims based on Fair Market Value (FMV), but strictly capped at the Maximum Insured Value (MIV) declared per line item at submission. Collectors who underdeclared values to save tier fees are exposed to painful claim shortfalls on cards that gemmed.

3. The Secondary Market & Cracked Slabs

Because PSA permanently deactivated all 6,451 cert numbers, major venues like eBay, Goldin, and Fanatics Collect block them automatically. The primary danger now lies in cracked slabs sold raw at card shows or unmoderated social channels (Whatnot, Instagram, Facebook).

"The most dangerous mile in a card's life is the one where you can't see it." — For full details on the confirmed timeline, victim compensation rules, and submission security protocols, read our Full Investigative Report on the PSA FedEx Truck Heist.

⚠️ Collector & Dealer Secondary Market Safety Advisory

Do NOT purchase slabs matching these certification numbers. All 6,451 cert numbers have been officially deactivated in PSA's database and will fail cert verification. Auction houses (eBay, Goldin, Fanatics Collect, Heritage) and platforms have automated blocklists for these IDs.

  • Cracked Slab Threat: Criminals often crack stolen slabs to sell the raw cards at shows or on social apps (Whatnot, Instagram, Facebook Marketplace). If offered expensive modern cards (Wembanyama Silver, 1st Ed Charizard, Gold Stars) raw without provenance, exercise extreme caution.
  • What to do if offered a stolen item: Preserve screenshots, seller username, listing URL, and payment details. Do not alert the seller. Immediately contact the FBI Los Angeles Field Office Duty Agent at (310) 477-6565 referencing the Santa Ana PSA FedEx Theft investigation.
