Bowman Gum issued its first baseball set in 1948 and followed with colour sets that competed with Topps for player contracts. The 1952 Bowman set is especially collectible, and the 1950s issues include early cards of Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays and other stars. Topps acquired Bowman in 1956 and folded the brand into its own line.
Topps revived Bowman in the late 1980s and turned it into the company’s prospecting label. Bowman Chrome introduced chromium stock and colour parallels, and “1st Bowman” cards became a standard chase for minor-league and rookie players. Modern Bowman Draft and Bowman Mega Box products are released around the amateur draft and the prospect calendar.
