1589 - Are We Creating Collectors ... or Players?
Dr. Beckett explores what it really means to be a “collector” versus a “player” in the sports card ecosystem, arguing that many new participants are drawn more to the action: buying, selling, trading, breaking, ripping, repacking, and tracking comps, rather than to long-term accumulation. He discusses industry growth goals like “10Xing,” referencing Fanatics’ push to expand the addressable market across a broader sports commerce ecosystem, and notes Panini’s past inroads while Fanatics lowers barriers by leveraging existing fan customers. Dr. Beckett frames participation as a funnel from spectator to player to collector, emphasizing that not everyone has the “collecting gene,” but collectors remain essential as end users who provide a final resting place for cards. He advocates for a healthy balance of players and collectors, highlights how liquidity and network effects have changed shows and pricing, and notes content creation can support both better “play” as well as collector formation.

PSA Says It’s Real, Steve Grad Says It Isn’t + Fake Jackie Robinsons + Autograph Horror Stories
How certain can anyone really be that an autograph is authentic?
Steve Grad joins Jeremy and David Chase for a fascinating deep dive into autograph authentication, beginning with one of the most controversial signed cards currently in the hobby: the 1952 Bowman Mickey Mantle that PSA has authenticated and Steve believes was NOT signed by Mickey Mantle.
Steve explains why he believes the signature is secretarial or clubhouse signed, walks through the exemplars and signing tendencies he uses to reach that conclusion, and discusses what it's like to publicly disagree with another major authenticator when hundreds of thousands of dollars may be at stake.
But how certain is an autograph authenticator? Steve explains when instinct enters the equation, when an authenticator should simply "punt" on an autograph, and even recalls reversing one of his own authentication decisions after going back and doing more research.
The conversation then turns to another potentially enormous issue: signed 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson cards. Of the nine known examples discussed on the show, Steve says he has seen five that he believes are not authentic.
They also discuss increasingly sophisticated forgery techniques, autopens, aging ink, whether autograph grades should have expiration dates and why an autograph sitting inside a slab can still change dramatically over time.
Then things get considerably more entertaining.
Years ago, David bought a collection of celebrity autographs on eBay, each accompanied by a letter of authenticity. He sends them to Steve for his verdict live on the show.
Michael Jackson. Aerosmith. The Sopranos. The Goonies. Michael J. Fox and more.
The verdict isn't pretty.
Meanwhile, Jeremy puts his own three vintage hockey autographs in front of Steve, including Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Steve Yzerman, with dramatically different results.
Finally, Steve explains why education remains a collector's greatest protection. Learn the signature. Learn the signing habits. Learn the known secretarial and clubhouse versions. And never assume that simply because an autograph is already inside a slab, the question has been settled.

We discuss how Gary Vee drops a video about 1930s Mickey Mouse cards, and hours later the prices run out of control. This year we have also had Logan Paul and his record setting sale of his Pikachu Illustrator. Do these Influencers really push the needle on prices and demand for these cards, or are some of these cards so low-pop, that the market can be controlled easily? We also do a deep-dive into the explosion of Non-Sports cards. We chat about the recent Disney and Star Wars trading cards boom. Mick explains his nostalgia for Star Wars, and Hank is fascinated how some of these cards are 50+ years old, and they lie dormant for years... only to have a sudden price discovery seemingly out of nowhere.

We Love the Nineties - or - Our Favorite 1990s Athletes Not Named Michael Jordan (Part 2)
Author Jon Finkel joins CSG’s flagship podcast for a loving look at the icons of the junk wax era.Jon Finkel, author of the acclaimed sports books 1996: A Biography and Windmills and Tomahawks: Nine Chapters About Dominique Wilkins, joined Collect This! host Alan Goldsher for a two-part breakdown of their favorite athletes and cards of the 1990s.“Jon and I are both total nineties sports nerds,” said Goldsher, “so breaking down our favorite players from our favorite decade was second nature, primarily because this is the sort of discussion we have whenever we talk sports. This is why we needed two episodes to get it all in.”Goldsher continued, “We each picked ten athletes, then we discussed why they were awesome, then we talked about what we consider to be the coolest card from each. These aren’t necessarily the best cards or players from the decade — just the ones who meant the most to us. The only rule was that Michael Jordan wasn't allowed, due to the obviousness factor. Oh, spoiler alert: Barry Sanders is only one of two guys who made both of our lists.”For more information about CSG, visit http://www.CSGcards.com. PSA Just Changed Grading Prices…is $25 Grading Gone?
PSA just launched a new $59.99 Standard grading tier while its cheaper Value options remain paused. On the surface, this could simply be PSA's next step toward reopening cheaper grading—but could it also be a test of what collectors are willing to pay?We break down PSA's new pricing, the massive grading backlog, what SGC's recent changes could tell us, and the biggest question: when PSA Value returns, will $20–$25 grading return with it?

Episode 116 Mickey Mouse and More with Cleve Bosher
Is Mickey Mouse the Next Giant in the Trading Card Hobby?
Disney cards are on fire and some vintage Mickey Mouse cards are reaching prices few collectors could have imagined even just weeks ago.
Joe Davis is joined by non-sports expert Cleve Bosher to dig into the rapidly changing Disney card market and clear up some major confusion surrounding Mickey Mouse’s earliest cards. Is the famous 1931 Wills card really Mickey’s “rookie,” or do much scarcer cards predate it?
From obscure European issues and the beautiful 1935 Mickey Mouse Gum set to early appearances of Pluto, Goofy, Donald Duck and other legendary Disney characters, Joe and Cleve explore the cards collectors are suddenly chasing - and why identifying true first appearances in the non-sports world can be so complicated.

Are Game-Worn Jerseys the Most UNDERVALUED Assets in Sports?!
Rob Gough joins Ryan Alford to discuss one of the most significant pieces of Michael Jordan memorabilia to come to market: the white jersey Jordan wore during Game 3 of the 1998 NBA Finals.
Rob shares how he tracked the jersey down, why he eventually decided it was time to sell and why he believes the best game-worn pieces from iconic athletes remain undervalued compared with other alternative assets. He also reveals that the jersey already has a $10 million bid and explains why he believes it could ultimately reach $100 million.
Ryan and Rob also discuss Rob’s broader collection, including his former 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 9, a rare Kobe Bryant Credentials PSA 10 and Dennis Rodman’s jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals. The conversation then expands into Rob’s approach to collecting, alternative assets and his plans for the World Jai Alai League.
