  3. SGC or CGC slabs on modern sports cards where PSA premium is significant. PSA 10s typically sell for more than SGC 10s or CGC 10s of the same card. If the card is a strong PSA 10 candidate, crossing to PSA can add 20-50% to the resale value.

Before cracking, verify all four conditions:

  • The card looks pristine through the slab (no visible flaws under bright, raked light)
  • Centering appears strong through the slab (measure if possible)
  • It was graded in a known looser era (2009-2014, 2019-2021)
  • The 9-vs-10 price gap is meaningful (at least $500+ for modern, $2,000+ for vintage)

When NOT to Crack a Slab

More cards should stay in their slabs than should be cracked. Here is when to leave it alone:

  • The slab has any visible flaw through the case. If you can see a scratch, print line, or corner issue through the slab, the card will not upgrade.
  • Centering is clearly off through the slab. If the centering looks worse than 55/45 through the case, do not crack — it will not grade PSA 10.
  • The card is vintage. Vintage slabs are part of the value. Old PSA flips (labels) are collectible themselves. Cracking a vintage card risks permanent damage and loss of provenance.
  • The 9-vs-10 spread is less than $100. Regrading costs $80+ in fees plus shipping. If the upside is less than $100, the math does not work.
  • Already a PSA 10. Nowhere to go but down. A PSA 10 that comes back PSA 9 on regrade loses enormous value.
  • Card is worth less than $50 raw. Risk outweighs reward. Damage during cracking can destroy 90%+ of the card's value.
  • Emotional attachment rather than financial logic. "I think it deserves a 10" is not evidence. Use AI pre-grading to get data before deciding.

PSA Grading Era Shifts: When Standards Changed

PSA grading standards are not static. Understanding when standards were looser or tighter helps identify regrade opportunities:

Key insight: PSA also tightened centering from 60/40 to 55/45 for PSA 10 in Q1 2025. Cards graded PSA 10 before this change with 60/40 centering might not grade 10 under current standards — but cards graded PSA 9 with 55/45 centering from before 2025 might have been held to the old 60/40 standard and could now be PSA 10 candidates.

Crossover Service vs Cracking: Which Is Safer?

Two ways to pursue a higher grade:

Option 1: Crack and resubmit raw

  • Crack the slab yourself (risk of card damage during extraction)
  • Sleeve in penny sleeve and Card Saver 1
  • Submit to PSA on the appropriate tier
  • Risk: Card can be damaged during cracking. If it comes back the same grade or lower, you have lost fees and the original slab/cert.

Option 2: PSA Reholder + Regrade (or crossover to different grader)

  • Submit the still-slabbed card without cracking
  • PSA cracks it internally, regrades, and reslabs
  • Or submit to a different grader with a minimum grade — if it meets the minimum, it transfers; if not, it comes back in the original holder unchanged
  • Advantage: No risk of damaging the card during cracking. If the card doesn't meet the minimum, you get it back in the original slab.

Recommendation: Crossover service is almost always safer than cracking. Use crossover when crossing from BGS/SGC/CGC to PSA. Only crack when you have strong evidence of undergrading, a big dollar gap, and you are experienced with slab cracking technique.

The Regrade Math: Expected Value Formula

Before any regrade, calculate the expected value:

Example calculation:

  • Current: PSA 9 worth $280
  • Target: PSA 10 worth $746
  • Grading cost: $80 (PSA Regular) + $15 shipping = $95
  • PSA 10 probability: 40% (based on visual inspection and AI pre-grading)
  • PSA 9 probability: 50% (comes back same grade)
  • PSA 8 probability: 10% (comes back lower — damage or stricter grading)
  • EV = (0.40 x $746) + (0.50 x $280) + (0.10 x $150) - $95 - $280
  • EV = $298.40 + $140 + $15 - $95 - $280 = $78.40 profit

If the expected value is not at least 2x the all-in cost above the current slab value, do not crack. In this example, $78.40 profit on a $95 investment is marginal — you would want stronger evidence of a PSA 10 probability before proceeding.

How to Safely Crack a PSA, BGS, or SGC Slab

If you decide to crack, follow these steps exactly. Rushing or skipping steps is the #1 cause of card damage during slab cracking.

Tools needed:

  • Heavy-duty tile nippers (for initial corner snap)
  • Flathead jeweler's screwdriver (for prying the seam)
  • Safety goggles (plastic shards are sharp)
  • Cotton or nitrile gloves
  • Penny sleeve and top loader (ready before you start)
  • Clean felt mat or microfiber towel (soft work surface)

PSA slab cracking technique:

  1. Lay down a clean felt mat on a flat, stable surface. Put on safety goggles and gloves.
  2. Have penny sleeve and top loader ready — the card should go directly from slab to protection.
  3. Grip the top corner of the slab (end farthest from the card) with tile nippers at a 45-degree angle on the sonic weld seam.
  4. Apply slow, steady pressure until you hear a "crack" — the weld breaks. Do not squeeze hard and fast.
  5. Insert the flathead screwdriver into the hairline fracture. Gently twist to expand the gap along the top edge. Always push the screwdriver away from the card, never toward it.
  6. Work slowly along the seam, separating the two halves.
  7. Tilt the slab to slide the card out into a waiting penny sleeve. Do not touch the card surface.
  8. Place in Card Saver 1 for resubmission.

BGS slabs are harder: The two halves are sonic-welded along the entire perimeter. Use tile nippers at multiple points along the seam. The card is held in an inner casing — remove that casing carefully and slide the card out. BGS slabs require more patience and force than PSA.

SGC slabs are easier: Friction-fit design with a tab system. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the seam near the tab and gently twist. The halves separate cleanly with minimal force. No nippers needed.
