Giuseppe and Benito Panini founded the company in Modena in 1961. Its first products were sticker collections, including sports albums and the Calciatori football stickers that became a fixture of Italian childhood. Sticker albums taught Panini the core collectible mechanic it still uses: a numbered set, a checklist and a chase.
Panini expanded across Europe through the 1970s and 1980s, publishing sticker and card collections for football, cycling, comics and entertainment properties. The company's distribution scale made it a natural entrant into American sports cards when licensing opened up in the 2000s.
Panini acquired Donruss and established Panini America, taking over the NBA licence in 2009 and the NFL licence in 2010. It rebuilt Donruss as a value flagship and launched Prizm, a chromium-style product whose colour parallels became the default language of modern basketball collecting.
National Treasures, Flawless and Immaculate pushed the high end with on-card autographs and memorabilia patches, while Select, Mosaic and Optic gave collectors multiple price tiers of the same rookie class. The Prizm Silver and Gold parallels are now among the most liquid modern basketball cards.
Fanatics Collectibles acquired the NBA and NFL licences from 2026, ending Panini's exclusive American football and basketball position. Panini continues to publish soccer, racing, entertainment and international products, and its back catalogue remains the benchmark for 2010s–2020s Prizm parallel pricing.

How this manufacturer's stock, cutting and production method affect the four grading pillars.
Modern Prizm cards are cut with much tighter tolerances than vintage, but centring still separates a 9 from a 10. Check both axes on the coloured border.
Chromium and foil surfaces show fingerprints, print lines and roller marks under raking light. Surface is the most common reason a visually clean Prizm card misses gem mint.
Prizm parallels are identified by border colour and finish, not by the base design. Confirm the parallel before comparing prices; a Silver and a base card are different markets.
Panini logo, album number and a peel-off sticker reverse; the album checklist is the authoritative set list.
The Prizm wordmark sits above the player; the parallel is the border/finish colour, and serial-numbered parallels carry a stamp on the back.
Thick card stock, a memorabilia window and an on-card autograph; the box label names the product.
Upload a front and back photo and get an AI condition read plus identification evidence.
Panini lost the exclusive NBA and NFL licences to Fanatics Collectibles from 2026, but it continues to publish soccer, racing, entertainment and international products.
Prizm combines a chromium finish, a large rookie class and a deep colour-parallel checklist. The Silver Prizm is the reference raw card for modern basketball rookies.
Look at the border colour and finish, then check the back for a serial number. A Prizm Silver has a rainbow-reflective finish, not a flat silver print.
