Company history

The 1989 entrance[1][2]

Pro Set was founded in 1989 in Dallas and quickly secured licences across football, baseball, hockey and racing. Its 1989 football set was a mass-market success, and the company followed with baseball and hockey products. The cards were inexpensive, widely distributed and printed in enormous quantities.

Errors and the 1994 collapse[1][2]

Pro Set became famous for error cards and corrections, including misspelled names, wrong photos and statistical mistakes. Collectors chased the variants, and the company leaned into the novelty. Overexpansion and the 1990s market correction led to bankruptcy in 1994, ending one of the loudest voices of the junk-wax era.

Grading notes

How this manufacturer's stock, cutting and production method affect the four grading pillars.

Overproduction[2]

Pro Set print runs were enormous, so high-grade copies are common. Rarity comes from errors and inserts, not base cards.

Stock and centring[2]

Cards use thin stock with frequent centring variance. Corner wear and print defects are normal.

How to identify Pro Set cards

1989-1994[1]

The Pro Set wordmark and copyright line identify the issue; error cards often have known correction variants.

Football[1]

The 1989 and 1990 football sets have distinct border designs and large checklists.
